About Us

Some barbecue places talk about craft. Midwood Smokehouse actually does the work, smoking meats low and slow until they hit that point where a fork is almost unnecessary. Part of the FS Food Group family with locations across North Carolina and South Carolina, the Raleigh spot anchors the Smoky Hollow development on W. Johnson Street, bringing genuine pit barbecue to one of the city's most energetic neighborhoods.

Guests keep coming back for the burnt ends and brisket, which showed up in a perfect one-two punch during Restaurant Week and earned a 10-out-of-10 from first-timers. The hush puppies have their own devoted following. Mac and cheese, smoked meats, outdoor seating on a beautiful patio, attentive service, a 4.5-star rating across nearly a thousand reviews. This is not a place you stumble into once.

With a rating built on almost 1,000 honest reviews, Midwood Smokehouse has earned its reputation the old-fashioned way: consistent food, a welcoming room, and sides that could headline their own menu. Whether you're grabbing lunch on a Tuesday or planning a full private dining event, the kitchen shows up the same way every time.

"Midwood Smokehouse has the best hush puppies that I have ever had. However, I was disappointed in the 1930 Brisket Cheesesteak. The cheesesteak had too much cheese and the brisket absent sauce was tasteless. The macaroni and cheese was good but basic. My wife ordered the pork plate and it was good. The Smokey flavor really comes through and it was further enhanced by adding the Carolina sauce. Baked beans were tasty and the coleslaw had a distinct and unique taste that was better than most. The food came out quickly and was and fresh. Overall, the restaurant was clean and the ambiance was great. 7/10."

"The service was excellent. The food was also great. We went on a Saturday afternoon and sat outside. The restaurant is located in a beautiful little spot. The waitress (Peyton I believe was her name) was fantastic, super nice and willingly answered all our questions, as it was our first visit. If you go, ask for some mustard it’s so dang good! Best hush puppies I’ve had in a long time as well!"

"10/10 experience! We tried this spot for Restaurant Week and everything was so delicious. The burnt ends and brisket were super flavorful, and the hushpuppies and mac & cheese were perfect comfort sides 😋 The chicken taquitos were surprisingly good too. I wasn’t expecting much as an appetizer, but wow, they really impressed me. My friends also ordered the chicken as a protein and said it was really good. And the apple pie bread pudding? Absolutely amazing. Highly recommend this spot, especially for Restaurant Week. The 3-course meal was $40 and totally worth it! btw I’m obsessed with their pickles - wonder if u can just buy some"

"I drive by this place all the time, but on this day I decided to just give it a try. Parking is annoying, but it's downtown, so of course it is. I ate by myself, and the service team was awesome trying to accommodate me and get food out to me quickly. I asked for two modifications on my food, no jalapenos in my guac (I have the palate of a newborn baby, so I can't handle much spice) and no pickles for my entree as they all come with them. The manager told me he can take the fresh jalapenos out of the guac, but that there was also jalapenos in the pico de gallo that was also included and I said that was fine. It tasted great. Sadly, on the entree they forgot and left their pickles on my plate which irks me cause I hate pickles and the pickle juice spreads everywhere on the plate and gets into everything. Did I still eat the sweet potato fries and burnt ends that were soaked in the pickle juice? Yes, cause it was only a few, so it wasn't enough for me to feel like causing an issue. I took the pickles off the plate quickly and dabbed at the juice on the plate with a napkin to soak up the juice asap as soon as I saw them on there, so the damage was minimal. However, I imagine if you like pickles, these are probably very good cause they didn't reek of vinegar and they looked really different from any other pickle presentations I have seen before. I included a photo of them so you can see what I'm talking about. Even with the pickle mishap, the waitress was super awesome and helpful. She also gave me a card for a free banana pudding at the end of the meal, which I will definitely be using when I come back. The burnt ends and sweet potato fries were so good! I originally told myself I would eat half and then save half for a to-go box for my lunch the next day, but they were so good that they didn't make it sadly. I was so full, but it was so worth it. I also got a mimosa which was good, but standard. I also idiotically splurged and got the pecan pie a la mode, which was so decadent and worth it, but man was I so stuffed. It should definitely have been shared by two or more people. I did get a box for that. It's interesting cause it seemed like it was trying to have a sports vibe, but it was more upscale than just a bbq joint to watch the game. I don't know what vibe they are going for, but its like they want both vibes. If it were me, I would just pick one and stick to it, but what do I know 🤷🏻‍♀️ Overall, this would be a really nice date night place. I will be coming back to with my husband and friends."

"I had an amazing experience at Midwood Smokehouse, and a huge part of that was thanks to our waiter, Ricky. He was incredibly kind, welcoming, and genuinely hospitable from start to finish. He checked on us consistently without ever being intrusive, and made sure everything came out perfectly. It’s been a long time since I’ve experienced service as thoughtful and attentive as Ricky provided. He truly elevated our entire evening and made it so enjoyable. You can tell he really cares about his guests and takes pride in what he does. I sincerely hope Ricky gets the recognition he deserves, he made our night. We’ll definitely be back!"
